Dear Parents, and Guardians, Welcome back to school! My name is Alex Wisdom, and I will be one of the Kindergarten teachers this year in room 203. Ms. Anna Lisa Martin will be arriving in Dalian shortly to Kindergarten as well. I graduated from Bishops University, in Quebec, with a Bachelor of Arts in primary education and a Bachelor of Education. I have thought primary school back home in Canada for the 2 years, and I am excited to be back at MLFNS-D for my second year teaching Kindergarten in Dalian. We will be exploring new topics, developing social skills and becoming more independent. For the month of September, the weather is still very hot, so we are allowing students to wear their PE uniform (shorts or pants, white t-shirt and track jacket) every day. The one exception is Friday, September 11th when the students will need to be in their formal uniforms for class pictures. I would like you to know, however, that starting in October, the students wear their PE uniforms on Monday, Thursday and Friday (please make sure this includes running shoes). On Tuesday and Wednesday, they should come to school dressed in their formal school uniforms. This includes pants/skirt, white button-up shirt, and tie. When the weather cools off, their blue sweater or red jacket can be added. Please ensure their name is inside any article of clothing they may take off during the day. Below is the list of school supplies that your child will need for this year: 6- Glue sticks (large) 1- Pair of scissors 1- Box of pencil crayons 1- Box of wax crayons (pastels) 8- Regular pencils (no mechanical pencils but regular pencils) 1- Black Erasable Pen or 1 Fine tip black marker for labeling and tracing 2- Sketch books for drawing A4 size 1- A4 size clear netting zipper bag or file envelope for homework + school notices 1- A3 size clear netting zipper bag or file envelope for schoolwork + artwork 2- Box of tissue 4- Erasers 1- Water bottle (metal or plastic) 1 A4 size 1.5 inch two-ring binder + 1 pack of binder dividers 2- Large Jars or 2 large packs of wet wipes (anti-bacterial wipes) 1- Pencil bag 1- Big, light backpack (big enough to fit the A4 zipper bag) 1- Large Bottle (350-1000ml preferred) of hand sanitizer (not hand soap!) 1 or 2 - sets of underwear and a change of clothes. Happy New Year! January is here and it is going an exciting month as we learn about space, the solar system and our own planet. Ms. Wu and I are looking into a possible trip to the planetarium in Dalian! Keep your eyes open for the permission slip in your child’s backpack. The temperature outside is very cold. It is very important for your children to have warm coats, hats and gloves, which are easy for them to put on. Please make sure your child is prepared to play outside in the wind and snow. Also, please label everything that your child brings to school. Kindergarten students often have a difficult time recognizing their own belongings. With so many items to keep track of, the lost and found is filling up. Take the time tonight to write your child’s name and grade in all of their personal items. Raz-Kids.com- Your child should be reading for 15 minutes, or more, each weeknight (Mon-Fri) as part of their homework. I have received a lot of positive feedback from parents and students using RazKids. However, some students are not using it enough. Daily reading, of at least 15 minutes, is important in developing literacy skills and getting ready for Grade 1. If you are having trouble with the RazKids program please contact me. *Reminder: to access RazKids, go to raz-kids.com, log on as user: k1dalian and find your child’s name. The money will be donated to a local orphanage. Good Luck! Language Arts: The students are continuing the Read Well program as well as the Reading Power on Wednesdays. Math: The next math unit is Measurement. Over the next few weeks we will be learning how to compare length, height, weight and volume. You can help your child at home by asking measurement questions about how about every day objects. For example: Which bus is longer? Which book is heavier? Which bowl has less food? Etc. Themes: Space. This month we will begin the exploration of our universe. We will be looking at our place on Earth and taking a tour of our Solar System and the universe beyond. Using the skills that we are developing in Math and English language arts we be learning about the different planets and stars in the night’s sky. We are also planning trip to the planetarium! Physical Education (PE): We have PE on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Please make sure that your son or daughter comes dressed in their PE uniforms on that day and they are wearing proper running shoes and warm outdoor gear. This month we are continuing to play cooperative games and we are learning to work as a team. Library: We have Library every Friday. The students may take home 2 English books and 1 Mandarin book each week. Please help your child remember to bring their books back on Thursday or Friday and enjoy reading with them throughout the week! Because of the long holiday, all books must be returned by January 16th. Cooking: In cooking class this month we will be making an edible solar system. Ms. Wu and I are taking the kindergarten students to Euro Bake with their grade 4 buddies. We will be making pizzas and gingerbread houses! This website gives our students access to 100’s of leveled books at school and at home. It also helps students develop reading skills and sends feedback to the teachers and parents. RAZ-Kids will be a part of our home reading program for term 2. Please send me any feedback or questions our may have had while trying to access the site. Show and tell items could include: a favorite toy, a book, a piece of artwork that they made, a souvenir from a holiday, photographs, a pet, etc. Cooking: Cooking class will be incorporated into our Euro Bake field trip with our buddies class. -Thank you parents that brought in food donations to help support our multicultural day. Our class had a lot of fun learning about the different type of cultural and trying new delicious food. As you may have seen in your child's folder today, our class is now subscribed to Raz-Kids. Raz-Kids is a collection of hundreds of levelled books that you can access online. The program is designed to find books at the right skill level for your child and then test them on their comprehension of the story or text. Students can chose to have the story read to them, or they can read it themselves. The students can also use the microphone to record themselves reading at home. This recording can be accessed by the teacher to see a student's progress. The power company informs MLFNS-D we will have NO POWER on Monday, Nov 24th and Wednesday, December 3rd · Classes will be held, except for computer classes. · Bathroom facilities will be functional. · Room temperature water will be available. · Hot lunch will be served, although the menu may be altered. Parents are welcome to send lunch or keep children at home however we plan to continue as best we can. The 2nd Scholastic book order flyers went home yesterday. Take a look in your child's backpack if you have not received it yet.
Please note that the English letters home did not include the date of return. All orders are due this Friday, November 21. Last week we celebrated three birthdays in our class. It was a busy week with way too much cake! :) There was a lot of caring and sharing going on in the classroom. Happy birthday again to Ronin, Kiara, and Joey! Hello parent volunteers, We have selected the parents who will be joining us on the trip on a first come, first serve basis. Hello Parents, November is here. With the excitement of Halloween behind us, we begin some new and exciting themes at school. We will be studying dinosaurs in class this month. Ms. Wu and I are looking into a possible field trip relating to our dinosaur theme. November is also special month as we take time to remember those men and women who have fought throughout history, in many different countries, to protect the freedoms of citizens throughout the world. Remembrance Day is on November 11th in Canada and we will do some activities this month to remember the people who helped us be able to enjoy the freedom we have today. Autumn is well under way and days are cooler. Layering is a good way to keep your child warm at school, just please make sure they are wearing white under their uniform shirts.
